First EPC Expert Training Successfully Held in Egypt
On 27 November 2024, the Integrated Development Group (IDG) and the Housing and Building National Research Center (HBRC) successfully delivered Egypt’s first Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) Expert training. This milestone event was organized as part of the BUILD_ME Project, in collaboration with Guidehouse, and hosted by HBRC, Egypt.
The training was led by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Salheen and Eng. Rana Mohamed from IDG, alongside Prof. Dr. Ashraf Kamal from HBRC. It brought together 24 professionals, including architects, engineers, and experts from diverse disciplines. The sessions provided a comprehensive introduction to energy efficiency and renewable energy concepts, focusing on the EPC labelling scheme in Egypt. Key topics included the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, an in-depth explanation of the certification process.
A significant portion of the training was dedicated to the theoretical foundations of energy efficiency and renewable energy. This knowledge was then connected to the BEP tool, a key resource for assessing building energy performance. The tool’s methodology and purpose were thoroughly explained, followed by a step-by-step walkthrough. the session concluded with an interactive BEP exercise, where participants had the chance to apply their new skills in a hands-on environment. This practical session reinforced the concepts learned throughout the day, enabling attendees to gain confidence in using the BEP tool for energy demand calculations and performance assessments.
Trained EPC Experts will be responsible for calculating energy labels for buildings on behalf of project owners, using the BEP tool. Trainees will soon undertake an exam to test their knowledge and skills before officially becoming certified Experts. Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to participate in the EPC Auditors training, scheduled for January 2025.
Overall, the event successfully empowered professionals to improve energy performance in buildings and advance sustainability efforts. In parallel, The BUILD_ME team will maintain ongoing discussions with policymakers and project developers to develop a robust and sustainable EPC scheme, fostering energy efficiency and advancing sustainable building practices across Egypt.
