Joining forces to increase buildings energy efficiency in the MENA region

This project aims to increase the energy performance standard in the buildings sector of the MENA region. We focus on the uptake of highly energy efficient and/or renewable-energy based heating and cooling systems in multi-family residential buildings in the Middle East and North Africa.

To facilitate the use of energy efficient technologies, we support the implementation of pilot projects in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. This is complemented by supporting a policy dialogue to improve the policy framework for energy efficiency measures in the buildings sector.

With a participatory approach involving different groups of stakeholders, we analyse differences, individual strengths and weaknesses of the legal and economic framework in the target countries from different perspectives. Based on this analysis, stakeholder-specific policy modules will be developed, which provide solutions to overcome barriers and increase the energy performance of the building sector of the MENA region.

This project is part of the International Climate Initiative. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision taken by the German parliament (Bundestag).
